Most dog lovers are crazy about all breeds of dog, if they are furry, with four legs, a tail, and a wet nose, they will be there to give them cuddles and treats. But for all dog lovers, there is one breed of dog that is just that little bit special, the one that makes you stare at them whilst passing by in the car. Mine is the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, and this is why.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are intelligent, obedient, loyal, and adorable. They will love you from the moment they meet you, and won’t leave your side for the rest of their lives. Cavaliers are the perfect family dog, an excellent dog for couples, and ideal to live with and adore a single person.
With these qualities, it’s no wonder that Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are the best dogs, but if you need to be convinced a bit more, then read on.
Intelligence
All dogs have a small degree of intelligence, I know many people that speak more than one language, but I don’t know one person that speaks the language of another species. To me, that is the epitome of intelligence, and dogs should be given more credit than they are usually given.
To put the intelligence of the Cavalier into some sort of context they ranked 44th out of 131 breeds that were tested and ranked in Stanley Coren’s “The Intelligence of Dogs”. This may not initially seem such a great feat, but only the top 131 intelligent breeds were tested.
There are currently around 380 different breeds of dog worldwide, which means that 249 dog breeds didn’t even make the cut for the test, and therefore ranked nowhere. Now, this is one intelligent pooch we have on our hands here.
Originally bred as a hunting companion, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel shines through here, showing off their intelligence even more. Although hunting for wild birds is something that most of us don’t do (I wouldn’t dream of killing a duck or a pheasant, it would upset me too much), Cavaliers still have this instinct.
This means that they are easily trained to fetch. If you want that to be the ball that you throw during playtime, or to collect the newspaper for you, or even your slippers when you are snuggled down on the couch and don’t want to move, a Cavalier will pick up these instructions with great ease.
Obedience
Most dogs are obedient when given the correct training, but as Cavaliers absolutely adore their human companions they are overjoyed to get your attention. This means with the correct training methods, using positive reinforcement, and giving them healthy treats, they will obediently follow all your commands.
Granted you may not be able to round up a herd of sheep or take down a would-be attacker, but commands such as heel, sit, and stay will be obediently followed with such happiness that they have completed a task for you.
You can literally see the joy in their eyes, which makes the task all that more enjoyable for you, as well as your beloved Cavvy.
Loyalty
Treat a Cavalier with respect, give them love, shelter, and a full belly every day and they will love you to the bitter end. Of course, they will allow other humans to pet them and rub their tummies, but their loyalties will forever be with you.
Loyalty is a funny thing in humans, loyalties can shift from one person to the next depending on what they have done for you, or are going to do for you. However, this doesn’t happen with a Cavalier. The bond that they create with you is unbreakable, and they are loyal to you and only you.
This obviously would be different if you have a family and your Cavalier loves each and every one of them. Their loyalty would then extend to the whole family, especially with female Cavaliers as they like to share their love around. Male Cavaliers tend to stick to one member of the family, but will still love each person in their own special way.
Off the Cuteness Chart
Just take a look at this adorable face. If I saw this beautiful thing in real life, I would stop everything I was doing just to have some snuggle time. Which is what I did, and still do every single day. This is my gorgeous girl, her name is Lady and she had stolen my heart from the first day I saw her.
This photo was taken in 2012 when Lady was in her adventurous stage. She would casually steal things from us, like the pear in the photo, or sometimes she would take off with my screwdriver when I was in the middle of some repair work.
She would give you this innocent look with her big brown eyes and my heart would just melt. She learned this trick at a very early age, and she still gets away with it to this day when she wants a tasty treat or a sneaky piece of chicken from my plate.
My Final Thought
Although I am biased to the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel dog breed, as Lady is part of our family, I wasn’t always like this. Throughout my life, I have had many dogs, all rescue dogs, and all different breeds. I loved them all with all my heart and they reciprocated their love for me. But the Cavalier breed is one in a million. Let them into your lives and you will never be the same, you will be a Cavalier lover forevermore.
